Endurance and Encouragement

As we move from the second to third week of Advent, Dan Riley, ofm, welcomes us to personalize messages rather than privatize them in our lives. He invites us to endure this Advent and find encouragement amid our busy, stressful lives, and walk with one another.

Readings:

Isaiah 2: 1-5

This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz,
saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
In days to come,
the mountain of the LORD’s house
shall be established as the highest mountain
and raised above the hills.
All nations shall stream toward it;
many peoples shall come and say:
“Come, let us climb the LORD’s mountain,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may instruct us in his ways,
and we may walk in his paths.”
For from Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and impose terms on many peoples.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
one nation shall not raise the sword against another,
nor shall they train for war again.
O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Romans 13: 11-14

Brothers and sisters:
You know the time;
it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep.
For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed;
the night is advanced, the day is at hand.
Let us then throw off the works of darkness
and put on the armor of light;
let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day,
not in orgies and drunkenness,
not in promiscuity and lust,
not in rivalry and jealousy.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.

Persistence of Prayer

Pray and not lose heart! So much is changing in life, including the seasons right now, but one thing does not change -- God's love. Fr. Dan Riley, ofm, invites us to be persistent and consider persistence in our lives.

Reading:

2 Timothy 3: 14-4:2

Beloved:
Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed,
because you know from whom you learned it,
and that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures,
which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation
through faith in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is inspired by God
and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction,
and for training in righteousness,
so that one who belongs to God may be competent,
equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
who will judge the living and the dead,
and by his appearing and his kingly power:
proclaim the word;
be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient;
convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

Let the Road Take Us

We're invited to journey with Jesus and all of creation. Fr. Dan Riley, ofm, extends that invitation further so we open our car doors, house doors and room doors to others. Listen to our hearts and celebrate the road before us.

Reading:

Matthew 7: 21, 24-29

Jesus told the crowd, "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell-- and great was its fall!" Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Fr. Dan's Saturday morning began here reflecting on the Gospel above. After the wedding he led, he let the road lead him. He thought Keuka Lake, but then decided to go to Canandaigua Lake and rose up through rain and mist on Torance Road. And then a big loop back to this spot on Conesus Lake.

Consider the Light

As we head into fall and daylight becomes shorter, observe where light is in our world and in our lives. Fr. Dan Riley, ofm, says in this reflection that while light may fade from our days, it can rise up in our hearts as we take time to consider.
